How Chemical Peels Work
A chemical peel involves the application of a carefully formulated chemical solution to the skin. This solution exfoliates and removes the outermost layers of dead and damaged skin cells. The depth of the peel is customized to address your specific skin concerns and goals.
Who is a good candidate for a chemical peel?
Anyone with skin texture and pigmentary irregularities will benefit from a chemical peel. Additionally, those with fine lines and wrinkles from aging or scarring from acne will see an improvement.
How can I maximize the benefits of a chemical peel?
To get the best results from a chemical peel, it is vital to follow all post-chemical peel instructions as directed by Dr. Chen. As part of this, wearing sunscreen daily and avoiding direct sun exposure (e.g., wearing a hat) are vital. Finally, using a medical-grade skin care regimen daily will help you maintain your results.
Who should avoid a chemical peel?
Those with active inflammatory disease of the skin such as autoimmune processes or active acne breakouts should wait until the inflammation has resolved before proceeding with a chemical peel.
Are there any risks associated with a chemical peel?
Chemical peels are generally very safe. The deeper the peel, the longer it takes for your skin to recover. During the recovery process, as your skin is peeling, it is important to follow post-chemical peel instructions to prevent scarring and other pigmentary changes. There is a small risk of an infection, and Dr. Chen may prescribe antivirals and/or antibiotics based on your medical history. Some patients may experience prolonged redness or pigmentary changes. Those with darker skin are more at risk of pigmentar changes.
What Happens During a
CHEMICAL PEEL?
A chemical peel typically takes about 30-60 minutes, depending on how many areas of the face will be treated.
Consultation
Before the procedure, you’ll meet with Dr. Chen to discuss your medical history and goals. He will then evaluate your skin and design a customized treatment plan.
Preparation
Depending on the depth of your specific peel, topical numbing medicine may be applied. Once numb, your skin will be cleansed and prepped for the chemical peel.
Chemical Peel
Your individualized chemical solution will be applied carefully to your face to help remove damaged skin, uncover new skin underneath, and stimulate collagen production. You may experience some mild burning or tingling as the peel is working. Once the peel is done, the solution is washed away, and moisturizer and other topical serums are applied.
Post-Treatment Care
You will be given detailed post-chemical peel instructions. It is critical to follow these instructions during the healing period which can last from 5-14 days depending on the depth of the peel. Dr. Chen will check on you regularly throughout the healing process.
