Choosing the Right Surgeon
The choice of the right rhinoplasty surgeon is as essential as the choice of reconstructive or cosmetic procedure. Not every doctor is qualified or experienced enough to deliver your desired results.
Referrals or a quick online search might help you get started, but as a potential rhinoplasty patient, you have much at stake—your safety, the cost of the procedure, and your appearance.
If you want the best outcome for your procedure, it’s vital that you choose someone who’s a proven and trusted expert.
To guide your decision, remember these 4 Es: expertise, experience, exceptional results, and empathy.
Expertise
The government doesn’t require surgeons to be trained in the specific procedures they offer.
This lack of requirement means some physicians who only have general surgery training can jump on the cosmetic surgery bandwagon for greater financial gain.
Thankfully, there’s one reliable way to know if the surgeon is the real expert they claim they are: Check if they are certified by a credible institution.
Rhinoplasty is a complex facial plastic and reconstructive procedure that requires years of proper training and education.
Board certification is a strong indicator that your surgeon has met these standards.
As a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Chen is a proud and active member of these prestigious organizations:
- American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
- American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery
Experience
Each reconstructive and cosmetic surgical procedure usually requires specialization. After all, each body part has different structures.
For example, operating on the nose, which is mostly made up of bone and cartilage, would be different from operating on a breast, which is primarily composed of fatty tissue.
This fact is the reason most effective surgeons specialize in a particular field and build significant experience in performing procedures in that area.
On that note, you’ll be glad to know that Dr. Chen has built a solid reputation for more than 19 years, including:
- Five-year ENT (ear, nose, and throat) residency
- One-year facial plastics fellowship
- 13-year clinical practice
Exceptional results
Education, training, and clinical experience matter, but equally important are real-world results that demonstrate your surgeon’s skills and qualifications.
While Dr. Chen’s background makes him uniquely qualified to perform rhinoplasty, he doesn’t rely on his credentials alone—he proves his expertise through real, lasting, naturally beautiful outcomes.
You can see the impact of Dr. Chen’s transformative rhinoplasty approach for yourself by comparing before and after photos in our patient gallery.
You can also follow ongoing testimonials of transformation on our Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok account pages.
Many of our patients were so grateful for Dr. Chen’s amazing work with them and have taken the time to share their stories of hope and healing.
Positive feedback on Dr. Chen featured on review platforms like Google, RateMDs, Vitals, and Healthgrades reflects his dedication and expertise in the field.
Empathy
The last but definitely not the least trait you should be looking for in a rhinoplasty surgeon is empathy.
Does your surgeon and his team make you feel safe, welcome, and comfortable when you’re with them? Do they take your questions seriously?
Do they value you as a unique individual, not just a number on their patient board?
At Chen Facial Plastic Surgery, we combine surgical precision with compassion. That’s why Dr. Chen’s first step when treating people is to listen to their concerns.
He always aims to provide individualized care and customize a surgical plan to your goals, preferences, and situation.

Chen Facial Plastic Surgery

What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that can improve the shape and contour of your nose.
You might know this nose procedure by other names, such as:
- Nose job
- Nasal surgery
- Nose reshaping
- Nose surgery
Rhinoplasty surgery can be categorized into two groups based on your treatment history.
Primary rhinoplasty is for people who want to improve their nose’s appearance and function for the first time.
On the other hand, revision rhinoplasty is a follow-up or corrective procedure for patients who want to fix or further improve the results of their previous nose surgery.
As a double board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Henry Chen effectively addresses a range of concerns, including:
- An overly large nose
- A crooked nose
- A bump on the nasal bridge
- Breathing difficulties
Ultimately, Dr. Chen’s rhinoplasty results can help improve your self-image and increase your confidence in social settings.
At Chen Facial Plastic Surgery, he combines surgical expertise with an in-depth understanding of facial aesthetics to deliver results that reflect who you are.
Dr. Chen’s philosophy is to tailor the procedure to each patient’s individual desires to achieve exquisite results with minimal downtime.
With his expertise and personalized approach, your surgery won’t just change your nose—it will enhance your facial harmony while preserving what makes you you.
Open vs. Closed Rhinoplasty
When considering rhinoplasty, it’s vital to know which surgical approach is ideal for you.
If you’ve done your own research on rhinoplasty, you may have read about open and closed rhinoplasty.
Here are the primary differences between the two to help you decide which surgical technique to choose:
Open rhinoplasty
This procedure is the most common rhinoplasty approach.
During an open rhinoplasty, Dr. Chen will make an incision across the columella (the tissue that links the nasal base to the nasal tip).
This rhinoplasty technique makes your inner nasal structures more visible and accessible to your surgeon.
If you are looking to reshape the tip, correct a deviated nose, or need a revision surgery, you might benefit from an open rhinoplasty.
Closed rhinoplasty
This surgical procedure is most often used for cosmetic surgery.
During a closed rhinoplasty, Dr. Chen will make small incisions inside the nose. This technique allows him to operate with more precision.
If you want to reduce a dorsal hump or make minor changes to the tip, closed rhinoplasty may be more suitable for you.
Still unsure which approach is right for you?
Here are comparison tables that list the pros and cons of open and closed rhinoplasty:
Pros
Open Rhinoplasty
- Unparalleled visibility and ability to correct any nasal issue
- Allows for a more accurate assessment of anatomy and surgical precision
- Facilitates advanced grafting techniques
- Ideal for revision procedures
Closed Rhinoplasty
- No visible incision
- Potentially less swelling and bruising after surgery
- Can address minor to moderate nose deformities
- Usually shorter procedure time
Cons
Open Rhinoplasty
- More swelling initially
- Risk of scar visibility since an open procedure involves an incision in the columella
Closed Rhinoplasty
- Restricted access and visibility to the nasal structures
- Less ideal for making major changes to the nose
As with any other surgical approach, open and closed rhinoplasty have specific indications and potential risks.
Dr. Chen is highly skilled in both techniques and will walk you through the best option for your case during your consultation.
No matter the method, he always maintains these goals:
- Preserve or improve nasal function
- Deliver cosmetic results based on your situation, goals, and preferences
- Reduce downtime

Consultation and Preparation
Ever walked into a doctor’s office and felt invisible? That won’t happen here.
At Chen Facial Plastic Surgery, every patient is treated as a person with unique features, goals, and expectations.
Dr. Chen and his team will ensure you’re seen, heard, and supported right from the start of your journey.
During your consultation, Dr. Chen will examine affected areas and assess your nose and other facial features to identify surgical possibilities.
Then, he will take the time to understand your objectives and address your present concerns so that he can map out your rhinoplasty surgery.
If you want to have additional procedures at the same time, you can discuss your options with Dr. Chen.
For instance, many of our patients choose to pair chin augmentation and rhinoplasty surgery since the appearance of the chin can greatly influence the perception of the nose.
Proper preparation can also help ensure a smoother surgery and recovery. Dr. Chen provides each patient with tailored pre-operative guidelines.
Here are some general steps to prepare for rhinoplasty:
Four weeks before surgery
- Avoid smoking. The toxins and chemicals in cigarettes, cigars, marijuana, or pipes may increase your risk of post-surgery complications, including poor wound healing and infection.
Two weeks before surgery
- Stop all herbs, medications, and supplements that may increase the risk of bleeding. Click here for a full list of medications to avoid.
Inform Dr. Chen about all the medications—whether prescription or over-the-counter—you’re currently taking.
Use Tylenol (acetaminophen) only for pain relief. - Complete your pre-op history and physical (H and P), including any required lab tests (blood work, electrocardiogram or EKG, and chest X-ray), one to two weeks before surgery.
Your primary care doctor must fill out the provided H and P form included in your packet.
Bring this form to your appointment and return it to us by fax or mail. - We must receive your completed paperwork at least 24 hours before surgery to move forward safely.
To secure your surgery date, provide your physician’s name and the schedule of your pre-op appointment at least one week in advance.
If we don’t receive this, we may have to reschedule.
The night before surgery
- Expect a call from us to review the details of your procedure.
- We’ll confirm your surgery time separately, so please ensure we have all the phone numbers where we can reach you.
- Set up a ride and have someone take you home after surgery.
- To help reduce pain and other post-op complications, start taking Arnica montana (available over the counter) two days before surgery, three times a day.
- Do not eat or drink anything after midnight
The day of surgery
- Do not wear jewelry, makeup, or contact lenses.
- Do not apply gel, mousse, or hairspray.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothes that don’t pull over your head, preferably a jogging suit with buttons, snaps, or a zipper.
- Choose flat or low-heeled shoes that are easy to slip on. No high heels.
What to Expect
Dr. Chen’s rhinoplasty procedure typically involves the following steps:
Anesthesia: In most cases, Dr. Chen performs rhinoplasty surgery while the patient is under general anesthesia.
You’ll be completely asleep, so you won’t feel pain or discomfort during the procedure.
Throughout the entire process, Dr. Chen, his anesthesiologist, and the nursing team will work together to ensure you’re safe and comfortable.
Incisions: Dr. Chen starts the procedure by making surgical incisions. The type of incision he will make depends on whether it is a closed or open rhinoplasty.
- For open rhinoplasty, Dr. Chen will make a cut at the base of your nose across the columella.
Then, he will separate your nasal skin from the nasal bone and cartilage.
This step exposes the bridge and the septum, giving Dr. Chen a better view of your nasal structures and access to your nasal tip cartilage. - For closed rhinoplasty, Dr. Chen will make a small incision inside the nose.
Reshaping the Nose: Dr. Chen will sculpt and refine your nose’s shape and contour to create a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.
If you have a deviated septum or other anatomical issues, Dr. Chen will also correct them to improve your breathing.
During this step, he might perform septoplasty, a procedure that straightens the nasal septum (the wall of bone and cartilage separating the space between the nostrils).
Dr. Chen might also use cartilage grafts to reconstruct your nose if you’ve had a previous rhinoplasty where the changes weakened or caused a collapse in your nose.
Closing the Incisions: Once the reshaping and restructuring are done, Dr. Chen will close up the incision in your nose with stitches, and then put a nasal dressing and splint over it.
Recovery and Aftercare
After your surgery, we’ll transfer you to the post-op recovery room. The length of your stay here depends on how you respond to anesthesia.
But once you’re stable, you’ll be cleared to go home.
You’ll need someone to drive you, as driving yourself is not allowed. You also can’t use a taxi or a rideshare, so ensure that you’ve arranged private transportation ahead of time.
Healing takes time, but you can help your body recover well. Follow these steps to support healing, prevent complications, and manage post-op swelling:
- Keep your nose clean with nasal saline rinses.
- Apply cold compresses to your cheeks every hour while awake for 5 minutes.
- Take Arnica montana three times a day.
- Keep your head elevated when lying down.
- Don’t blow your nose or put anything inside your nose.
- Avoid any pressure, objects, or unnecessary contact with the operated area.
- Avoid any strenuous activity that could cause stress or injury to your nose.
- Stay hydrated
- Take pain relievers as directed if needed.
Most importantly, be patient. Full recovery takes time.
Healing will be an ongoing process for at least the first year after surgery as swelling goes down.
While you’ll notice significant improvement in the first few weeks or months, it can take a minimum of 12 months for the final results to fully emerge.
But don’t worry—Dr. Chen’s surgical approach focuses on faster healing and minimal downtime, so you can get back to feeling like yourself sooner.
In fact, most patients feel well enough to return to work in about a week.
At Chen Facial Plastic Surgery, healing doesn’t end after surgery—and we’re committed to supporting you every step of the way.
We’ll monitor your recovery through scheduled follow-up visits post-surgery to track your healing and long-term results.
And if something doesn’t feel right or you just have a question, don’t hesitate to reach out. Dr. Chen is only a text or call away and is always ready to help.

Benefits of Rhinoplasty
Most of Dr. Chen’s rhinoplasty patients are satisfied with the results. Here are some of the benefits they’ve enjoyed through his procedures:
- Resolved breathing problems: Aside from its cosmetic benefits, rhinoplasty can also fix functional issues with your nose, such as nasal deformities or difficulty breathing due to a deviated septum.
- Improved nose shape: Rhinoplasty can correct various aesthetic concerns with the nose, such as a bulbous tip, a bump on the nasal bridge, or an external deviation.
- Enhanced facial harmony: Improving the shape of your nose can enhance the symmetry and balance of your face. This effect can be particularly beneficial to you if you feel that your nose is disproportionate to other facial features.
- Boosted confidence and improved self-image: Successful rhinoplasty operations generally improve the health-related quality of life, self-esteem, and body image. Studies have shown that patients who have undergone rhinoplasty are perceived as more attractive, more successful, healthier, and younger.
Addressing Common Concerns
If you’re thinking about rhinoplasty, it’s normal to wonder, “Is it safe?” Especially because the procedure involves your face.
Rhinoplasty is a common and generally very safe procedure, but like any surgery, it carries some risk. The most common ones include swelling, infection, bleeding, and scarring.
Fortunately, with today’s surgical standards, antibiotics, and modern sterilization, the risk of infection is very low and manageable.
The most important factor in minimizing these risks is choosing the right surgeon.
Dr. Chen is a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon who has dedicated nearly 20 years to refining his craft.
Beyond his private practice, he volunteers annually in underserved areas abroad, treating children and adults with complex facial conditions.
In those environments, safety isn’t optional—it’s essential, even when resources are limited.
That same level of care, precision, compassion, and dedication is exactly what Dr. Chen offers to every rhinoplasty patient in Beverly Hills.

Cost of Rhinoplasty in Beverly Hills
The cost of rhinoplasty in Beverly Hills varies based on several factors, including:
- Complexity of the case
- Type of surgery
- Anesthesia and facility fees
This also includes access to Dr. Chen, a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon with extensive experience performing rhinoplasty and delivering exceptional outcomes.
If you want further clarification regarding the procedure’s cost, call (310) 997-0280 or fill out the form here for a consultation.
During your consultation, Meghan, our front office coordinator, can help answer your preliminary questions, including the potential costs of the rhinoplasty procedure.
Once you’ve decided to undergo the surgery, Emmy, our patient care coordinator, will act as your private concierge. She’ll ensure seamless communication between you and Dr. Chen and provide extra support whenever needed, including when navigating financial matters.
Is Rhinoplasty Covered by Insurance?
Your insurance may cover a partial amount of the cost of your rhinoplasty if the procedure addresses any of these functional issues:
- Chronic breathing obstruction
- Nasal deformity due to trauma or injury
- Deviated septum
For instance, septoplasty, a procedure to straighten the septum, may be covered by your insurance if it’s performed together with your rhinoplasty.
Don’t worry—if you need help, our professional and knowledgeable staff will help you obtain insurance coverage for your procedure.
At Chen Facial Plastic Surgery, we believe that financial barriers shouldn’t hinder people from seeking the treatment they need and deserve.
In fact, Dr. Chen’s commitment to care goes beyond the operating room. Every year, since 2012, Dr. Chen has traveled to
Guatemala to provide free facial surgeries through medical missions with HELPS International.
Dr. Chen brings that same spirit of compassion to his Beverly Hills practice. Aside from helping you clarify insurance options, he also offers discounts to first responders and veterans.
What You
Need to Know
Revision rhinoplasty aims to revise or correct a previous rhinoplasty surgery. You may seek this procedure if you experience persistent breathing functional issues or dissatisfaction with the appearance of your nose.
Choosing a reputable rhinoplasty surgeon with extensive experience in revision procedures is vital if you want a better rhinoplasty outcome.
Fortunately, as a double board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Chen is a trusted revision rhinoplasty specialist.
Revision rhinoplasty is more challenging and complex than primary surgery due to the presence of scar tissue and changes in nasal anatomy from previous procedures.
Often, too much healthy cartilage has been removed, which weakens the nose and can cause it to collapse or block airflow.
To repair this, Dr. Chen may need to use cartilage grafts (cartilage from another part of your body) to rebuild and restore both the shape and function of your nose.
His approach is meticulous, aiming to achieve both functional improvement and aesthetic harmony.
Are you considering a revision rhinoplasty? Let Dr. Chen help you.
He is uniquely qualified to correct or revise a previous rhinoplasty outcome that didn’t meet your expectations or has damaged your nasal function.
Safety and Timing of Revision Procedures
An important factor to consider in revising rhinoplasty is adequate healing time after the initial rhinoplasty surgery.
The healing process can take a considerable time, often extending for a year or more.
While the initial bruising or swelling may subside within weeks, subtle changes in your breathing and the appearance of your nose will evolve gradually.
Patients should remember that the final results become clear only after the healing process is fully complete.
That’s why patients are advised to wait 12 to 18 months after the initial nose procedure before considering revision rhinoplasty.
Dr. Henry Chen has completed a fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, equipping him with specialized expertise in complex nasal procedures, including revision rhinoplasty.
Choosing a surgeon of his caliber is crucial for safe and effective revision rhinoplasty.
Ethnic Rhinoplasty Considerations
Your ethnic facial features are central to who you are. Dr. Chen understands this fact very well.
A core aspect of his personalized care philosophy is respecting each rhinoplasty patient’s cultural considerations, particularly if they belong to non-White ethnic groups.
The medical term for this approach is ethnic rhinoplasty.
Are you looking for a surgeon who can change what you dislike about your nose’s appearance without compromising your unique look?
Dr. Chen can elevate your natural beauty without erasing your heritage.
Tailoring Techniques for Diverse Features
Nearly 30% of rhinoplasty patients in the US (United States) are non-Caucasian. This demographic includes African-American,
Hispanic, Asian, and Pacific Islander.
Nasal anatomical features vary widely among these ethnicities, and those variations may affect respiratory function.
For instance, people from colder, drier climates (like Caucasians) usually have narrower noses than those from warmer, humid climates (like individuals of African descent).
As such, Caucasians have the highest nasal resistance, meaning airflow through the nose faces slightly more friction.
These differences suggest that “Westernizing” your nose may require functional trade-offs and may result in an increased risk of revision surgeries.
Reputable surgeons like Dr. Chen can enhance features while respecting cultural identity, knowing that preserving shape doesn’t have to put function at risk.
With advanced training and years of experience performing ethnic and revision rhinoplasties, he can deliver natural, beautiful outcomes tailored to ethnically diverse patients.
Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty Options
Nonsurgical rhinoplasty, also called “nonsurgical nose job” or “liquid rhinoplasty,” is an option for some patients who want minor nose changes without the extended duration of surgery.
Generally, a liquid rhinoplasty uses dermal fillers to reshape the nose temporarily.
Nonsurgical procedures use dermal fillers, including hyaluronic acid, Juvéderm®, or Restylane®.
Dr. Henry Chen specializes in both surgical and nonsurgical procedures of the head and neck. He can help you explore your options with clarity and confidence.
FAQs About Rhinoplasty
What if I need to blow my nose after surgery?
Dr. Chen advises patients not to blow their noses for at least a month after surgery to prevent bleeding and maintain healing.
The best way to clean your nose during your post-op recovery is by using a saline rinse. This technique gently clears mucus without causing irritation.
You can also use a tissue or Q-tip, but ensure you use it so gently—don’t snort or squeeze.
When can I return to work after my rhinoplasty surgery?
While the recovery period may vary, you can usually return to work a week following your rhinoplasty procedure.
Dr. Chen understands the importance of balancing your recovery with real-life responsibilities. His surgical plan always aims to minimize downtime without sacrificing the quality of the outcome.
What is the difference between revision and primary rhinoplasty?
Primary rhinoplasty is for patients who desire to enhance their nose’s function and aesthetics for the first time.
Meanwhile, revision rhinoplasty is a corrective procedure for people who want to fix or further enhance the outcomes of their previous nose procedure.
